Royal Doulton Bunnykins Anne of Cleves
Royal Doulton continues the great Bunnykins tradition with the addition of Anne of Cleves, Henry the VIII's fourth wife, and part of the Tudor Collection. Henry waited two years after the death of his third wife Jane Seymour before making inquiries of a new wife that may help him politically. Agents and painters such as Hans Holbein were sent out to scout for this new wife and found Anne of Cleves, sister of the Duke of Cleves whom at that time was a potential ally of France and the Holy Roman Empire. However, after Anne arrived, Henry did not find her the least bit attractive and was said to have called her the "Flemish Mare", although portraits show her to be a handsome woman. Anne and Henry were divorced after six months of marraige. Anne having seen what could happen to a wife of Henry accepted this fate and graciously took her new title "King's Sister", living quite well on property given to her by Henry.
Royal Doulton has given Anne a colorful gown of blue, yellow and orange. She looks lovely and gracious with a traditional headdress of her German heratige. She holds a bouquet of flowers in her right hand...giving us the feeling that she is quite content with the decisions that were made in her life. Sculpted by Martyn Alcock, each Royal Doulton Bunnykins character in the Tudor Collection has been carefully researched and are based off of portraits by Henry VIII's contemporary, artist Hans Holbein (1497-1593).
Collecting Royal Doulton Bunnykins is fast becoming a tradition that is passed through generations. Each piece is a treasure and a unique gift that celebrates the quality craftmanship of Royal Doulton and the personalities of our history and beyond.
