The stories about Brer Rabbit and his friends were gathered by Joel Chandler Harris, a newspaperman from Georgia, in the late 1800s. Harris retold stories he had heard from African-Americans in the American South who carried a rich storytelling tradition with them from Africa. Brer Rabbit is similar to Anansi, the spider from West African folktales: a small, powerless creature who nevertheless comes out on top through cunning, mischief, and charm. This "trickster" character is common in many cultures.
Brer Fox is one of Brer Rabbit's friends, and this cute hand puppet from Folkmanis shows Brer Fox in all his furry glory. Wearing corduroy pants held up by suspenders and featuring a big furry tail and workable mouth and arms, Brer Fox is a fun puppet for kids acting out the Brer Rabbit tales.
