The stories about Brer Rabbit and his friends were gathered by Joel Chandler Harris, a newspaperman from Georgia, in the late 1800s. Harris retold stories he had heard from African-Americans in the American South who carried a rich storytelling tradition with them from Africa. Brer Rabbit is similar to Anansi, the spider from West African folktales: a small, powerless creature who nevertheless comes out on top through cunning, mischief, and charm. This "trickster" character is common in many cultures.
This cute hand puppet from Folkmanis shows Brer Rabbit in all his mischievous glory. Wearing striped pants and a green velvet jacket, Brer Rabbit features a workable mouth and arms, making him a fun puppet for kids acting out the Brer Rabbit tales.
