About the Meerkat
Meerkats, or suricates, live on the open plains in southern Africa. They are a type of mongoose, and feed on insects, mice, and lizards. They live in underground burrows in large, social groups. A few can always be seen standing on their hind legs, looking for predators. If one is spotted, a warning cry is sounded and they all dive into the burrow for safety.
