About the Australian Pelican
The Australian pelican is one of seven species of pelicans and is found in wetlands, estuaries, lakes, and rivers throughout Australia. Pelicans feed mostly on fish, and occasionally hunt them cooperatively in huge flocks. Their sensitive bill helps them locate fish in murky water. Contrary to popular belief, the pelican does not store food in its pouch. Rather, it uses the pouch like a net, capturing fish and forcing the excess water out before swallowing the fish whole.
