About the Prairie Dog
Found on the open plains in North America, prairie dogs form a complex society. Their underground burrows are complex, with multiple entrances and many chambers for sleeping and caring for their young. Grasses and other plants make up their diet. During winter, they stay underground. Considered a nuisance by farmers, the prairie dog population has been nearly wiped out, and few remain in the wild.
