Breyer Bucephalus Alexander the Great (356-323 B.C.) was the outstanding military leader of his age, extending the Greek Empire into Egypt and east to the borders of India. His chosen mount was Bucephalus, meaning "oxhead," a particularly large horse with a black coat and a white star on his forehead. Bucephalus was 30 years old the last time Alexander rode him into battle and at the end of the day, the great horse died from his wounds. Alexander buried his mount with full military honors and founded the city of Bucephalia on the site.
