Meet Shen. Her name means "mystical" in China. What an appropriate name she has! Shen is such an unusual creature, many of the other animals believe she has mystical powers. Some animals have even asked Shen to grant them wishes! Shen just shakes her head and repeats the Chinese saying, "Great souls have wills; feeble ones have only wishes."

Shen is a panda. The Chinese name for the giant panda is "da xiong mao" meaning "great bear cat." No wonder. The giant panda has the same basic shape as the black bear. In fact, giant pandas are now usually classified as bears by scientists. Until recently, giant pandas were grouped with raccoons!

Ancient books reveal that the Chinese believed the panda had mystical powers. So watch your step with this little one!

The giant panda lives in inland China, in the Sichuan Province and the Min Mountains.
